10:59 am - A small New Year's Offering
It is a testimony to how far off the earth (Verse?) I have fallen when it took me a few minutes to remember how to get to this LJ, and how to format. Yikes. I have not been writing fiction of any kind, fan or original, in months and months. Been mostly keeping up with RL, catching up with what was ignored while I was playing too much in fantasy land, and essentially treating the internet as a place of evil to be avoided lest I be sucked back in to the world of glorious irresponsibility. Could be that in 2009 I learn how to balance the two. But as it happens, as I was cleaning dishes the other night, that rascal Mal, who has been long absent from my brain, started, of all things, to sing. It was irresistible, like those Christmas cards you get from folks you haven't heard from in a year. So I wrote down his song, and rather hastily wrapped a small vignette around it so I wouldn't lose it. A few more notes to those I have woefully ignored: mal4prez, I just opened your email, so this maybe answers what I am up to. katesfriend1, if you're out there, I hope you enjoy. terimaru, I miss you terribly, and when I work out the balance in my life maybe I can come back to chat. And browncoat_2x2, I'm glad you're back in the Verse, too.

Since Hez made me write this - which was really good of her as maybe it will shake the brain loose and get me to think about finishing DTRH - I decided to share. (Decided. Yeah. We all know I am a fic whore.) So, Hez said, Mal's standing in front of Tracy's parents after bringing their son home. We see the snow falling down. What's he thinking? It was supposed to be 100 words, but, yeah, right. Thanks, corporal.

Damn but he was cold. Yi qui iceball they stuck people on, expected 'em to make do. If he had folk livin' here, he'd do his damndest to get 'em off, too. But with a plan that had a chance in di yu of workin'. Gorram Tracey'd never had a lick of sense, never.
That'd be his ma, leanin' over him. Use to send him letters sayin' to mind his superiors 'n come home safe. Son of a bitch never much minded anyone less he was gettin' his ass shot off and was callin' for help, the wang be dan. Was always tellin' him to look out. Never mattered. Boy carried trouble like he had a magnet for it. Turns out was only a magnet for Mal's bullet 'n threats aside, that was wrong. That was twenty kinds of wrong. This was Tracey, no more sense 'n a Fed's rear end. Made you want to dust him yourself with the stuff he'd pull, but then he'd show with lifted hooch 'n everyone would have a laugh.
Sure as hell wasn't Mal was supposed to end him. Verse knows he'd seen every sad-ass sadistic twist on wrong in the past ten years but none of it... Hell.
Was glad Kaylee gave Tracey's daddy the recording. Said more'n he could, 'n he didn't much feel like talking.
Wasn't Mal was supposed to end him.
He looked to Zoe. It shouldn'a been us.
Shouldn'a been us.
But maybe best it was.
Damn, but he was cold.

Hi, I am working without a beta net because I realllly wanted to get this posted today, or it would have had to wait til some time...not now. Thanks to browncoat_2x2 for helping me work through some ideas and for chaptered fic solidarity, thanks to terimaru for encouragement. Neither of them are to blame for my mistakes in here, so if you see some, let me know. (Thanks jules1278!)
Also, sincere apologies to all the firefighters, EMTs and medical professionals I am insulting with my writing in these current chapters. I've tried to be realistic but... it's fiction. Which is peopled with characters belonging to Joss Whedon, not to me.

09:35 am - A Zoe/Wash fic rec, and an older Zoe/Wash fic post
This morning I read an excellent Zoe/Wash fic by leven_kemal called Cold, Cold Ground that takes place following "The Message." It's a nice piece of work and I highly recommend it.
*Yes, it is NC17, browncoat_2x2 and terimaru, but even I could handle it.
It reminded me of a different, short piece I had done a while ago that's in the same time period, and made me want to post it here. Some of you will recognize it from a 2006 fic challenge in which we explored the softer side of Zoe.

Shortish compared to 13, and they're still in the house, and there's no action and much talking, but they wanted to include this part. Probably because it was the idea that started the whole story, although it has since been eclipsed by everything else going on. Funny how that works, huh?
Be informed that I am still adding to and editing out even as this is posted. Thanks. Comments on whether this works or not are appreciated, as I haven't cross-posted it yet and I'm not sure when I will. Yeah right, who am I kidding? I tapped my fingers for about an hour, did some rewriting, then caved massively in and posted, warts and all, at fireflyfans.
